The name garnet comes from the Latin word "granatus" meaning grain. Some say it is a reference to "Punica granatum" (pomegranate) because of the stone's similar shape, size and color to the plant's deep red seeds. Blue garnet is the rarest form of this semiprecious stone, and was first discovered in Madagascar in the late 1990s. Garnet is January's birthstone.
